Welcome to Art at Lockport School!

When you're in the art room, you are expected to:

  • Follow classroom behavior expectations
  • Come to class ready to participate in classroom discussions and activities
  • Put your personal electronics away. The use of phones and other personal electronics in class is not allowed unless permission is given for specific projects. Please see the school policy on electronic devices for more detailed information.
  • Complete assignments and projects on time. Class time will be given for students to work on assignments, however any work not completed during this time will become homework. Detailed information regarding assignment requirements will be given in class before we start each assignment.
  • Use all art equipment properly and respectfully, to clean up their work space after each class, and to follow class and equipment safety rules. Students will not be allowed to use classroom art supplies if there is an intentional misuse of equipment.

This year, we are lucky to have a teacher candidate with us! Ms. Muir is in her certifying year of Education and is an accomplished artist. She will be working with the classes in December and again from late April through May!

Grade 7:

This year we will:

  • Discover why art is important in culture
  • Learn about the elements and principles of art
  • Investigate how numerous artists have contributed to the world of visual art
  • Work with a variety of tools (art media) to create art
  • Participate in self-assessment and reflection on our own work
  • Learn how to view and discuss works of art in a meaningful and constructive way

Grade Distribution:

Daily work: 40% (In-class assignments, participation in classroom discussions, effort, and productivity)

Projects: 60%

Grade 8:

This year we will:

  • Discover why art is important in culture, and how art shapes our understanding of different global communities
  • Explore art from a variety of cultures including Ancient Greece and Rome
  • Examine some of the different styles, techniques, and mediums that are used to create art, and work with a variety of media for projects
  • Learn more about the elements and principles of art, and how to use them while creating art
  • Participate in self-assessment and reflection on our work and performance
  • Learn how to view and discuss art in a meaningful and constructive way

Grade Distribution:

Daily work: 40% (In-class assignments, participation in classroom discussions, effort, and productivity)

Projects: 60%

Grade 9:

Throughout this school year you will be challenged to creatively incorporate the elements and principles of art into your work and you will build skills to become more proficient and independent artists! You will have opportunities to use a wide variety of art media through which to build your creative expression and ability to create art.

Together, we will explore how artists enhance our world's landscape. We will analyze how artists from a wide variety of time periods and styles have influenced art, and learn how art history affects our current understanding. In order to create a positive learning environment, you need to come to class ready to participate in classroom discussions and activities. You are expected to follow classroom expectations for behavior, and to use effective time management skills throughout the course. It is important to you complete your projects by the due dates! Class time will be given for you to work on projects. Any work not completed during this time will become homework to do on your own time outside of class. Detailed assignment requirements will be discussed in class and provided in writing before starting each assignment.
